A Brief History of Meditation in the West

Our forefathers believed that you could bring about physical and emotional healing just through your ‘thoughts’, or what we now call ‘meditation’. This is of course not the same as mindfulness, which has famous advocates today from CEOs to athletes. What similarities do previous forms of meditation hold with modern ones? Many. Some of the published works of the great discoverers and healers, such as QI GONG, JESUITS WHO HEALED WITH THEIR MIND. We know that Mark Twain read about it in a newspaper article and learned it by just watching. And we see that many people are turning to meditation these days because they have discovered the secret that physical and mental health depends on our connection with universal energy rather than trying to deny or fight against our own stress levels. As we speak (or write), your mind is probably absorbing this information more from your unconscious than from your conscious outer hearing! There was a scientific study about this, as early as 1969, with ‘real’ mediums in classic controlled conditions by Dr. Alex Tanous—who actually filmed it on his 16mm camera! I have an article to prove that that has been documented and analyzed over time. We can call it psychic surgery or scientifically proven dowsing for the real world, we can find something we'd always wanted to know but had no way of knowing before.

Origin of Meditation

Meditation has been practiced for centuries in the East. However, it only became popular in the West in the 20th century. The most popular form of meditation in the West is Transcendental Meditation (TM). This form of meditation was introduced by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in the 1950s.
